How to be Green: Saving Costs and Reducing Energy

At Earth Circle, we believe that recycling isn't the only way to conserve resources. Below, are some ideas on how you can conserve energy, lower your utility bills and preserve the environment in your home or office:

Saving Costs at Home

  • Ceiling fans should be set correctly for the season. In the summer, fans should spin counter clockwise and clockwise in the winter.
  • Unplug chargers (for laptops, phones, etc.) when not in use. Also unplug appliances with a standby light or a clock. Any appliance that doesn't have a power switch can be drawing power, resulting in a higher electric bill.
  • Utilize online banking and have all bills are sent by email. Banking online also reduces your chances of identity theft.
  • Using a toaster or microwave, instead of the oven, will keep energy costs down in the summer.
  • Only run the dishwasher when it is full and don't use heat to dry the dishes.
  • Keep your freezer and refrigerator full. The ice box works more efficiently when there is no empty space to cool.
  • Using the exhaust fan in the shower reduces humidity and mold. Limiting your shower time to 5 to 10 minutes will also reduce your water bill.
  • Insulate or finish the ceiling in your basement. Make sure all windows and doors are well sealed.
  • Only using cold water in the washing machine could save you up to $50 a year. Always wash a full load of clothes.
  • Making sure your A/C unit is in a shaded place that is clear of plants, shrubs, trees and other debris helps keep the cost of your utility bill down as well as extending the life of your air conditioner.
  • Using timers and motion sensors on exterior lighting will keep your electric bill down.

Reducing Energy at the Office

  • Recycling used printer cartridges or refilling them is less expensive and is a good way to recycle.
  • Setting the power saving mode on your computer to ten minutes can cut the cost of your computer's energy use by about 65%.
  • Buy a USB flash drive. It will save money and waste compared to burning files onto CDs or DVDs.
  • Recycle old computers and office equipment when replacing them. See where to recycle old office equipment by looking at What's Recyclable?

Keeping Your Automobile Green

  • Keeping your tires properly inflated helps your car get better gas mileage and makes your tires last longer.
  • Don't let your car unnecessarily idle. For every two minutes a car idles, it uses enough fuel to go a half mile.
  • Don't wash your car at home. Besides using a lot of water, the run off of oil and other chemicals from the soap will flow down sewer drains and into our water ways.
